The European Commission has a need to support and strengthen the European Missions, particularly the ‘Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities’ and the ‘Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change’. One of the proposed actions, through a public tender, is a competition to encourage the collaborative development of technologically and socially innovative solutions by teams of citizens and researchers to tackle the challenges of climate change.
From Barrabés.biz, leading a consortium composed of Energy Cities, Eurada, ECSA and Eurocrowd, we made a winning proposal that divided the championship into four stages. The first stage involved the development of 22 local and virtual hackathons in different locations in Europe. The second stage included the development of training modules and coaching activities for the winning teams of these local hackathons. The project continued with a third stage covering the development of a final in which teams could compete for prizes in three categories: best smart and climate-neutral city solution; best climate change adaptation solution; and best cross-cutting solution. And finally, the fourth stage proposed to implement a series of support activities for the winning teams.
We faced a major logistical challenge, team organisation, and participant recruitment, which ultimately paid off with hackathons that ran successfully and generated excellent solution ideas for the challenges presented.
